A survey task may take only a short time on site, but it can sit in front of design, excavation, formwork, asset capture or handover. Put the task in the programme before the dependent work begins, confirm the required information, and then agree the dates with the surveyor.

South Australia has several long-term construction programs underway or planned. The River Torrens to Darlington project is a $15.4 billion, 10.5 km North-South Corridor project with works underway.1 The Greater Adelaide Regional Plan identifies locations for around 315,000 homes over 30 years.2 Defence has published workforce forecasts for the Submarine Construction Yard at Osborne, and South Australia opened feasibility-licence tenders for the Whyalla West renewable-energy release area in April 2026.34

These are official planning and project sources. They do not tell you a particular firm’s availability or lead time. Confirm that directly with your chosen surveyor. The practical point for any project is simpler: write each survey dependency into the programme before the work it enables.

Write survey dates into the job plan before the crew arrives

Write each survey into the project programme earlier than the stage when the crew arrives on site. You run a feature survey (the existing-conditions measure of what is already on the land) before design, but you programme it at feasibility. You run an as-built survey (the final record of what you built) at handover, but you programme the capture sequence before construction starts so assets are recorded before they are buried.

The first date is the planning milestone. The second is when fieldwork is required. Use the gap between them to confirm the scope, dates, access, design information and availability.

Put Australia’s official map and height system in the design brief

A datum is the coordinate and height reference used by drawings, models and field measurements. GDA2020 is Australia’s national geodetic datum. MGA2020 is the map grid based on it. AHD is the national height datum, and AUSGeoid2020 supports AHD height estimates from GNSS observations.56

Put the coordinate reference system, height datum, current design revision and any existing data source in the design brief. If older data is part of the project, ask the surveyor to review it before fieldwork. The client or receiving authority should confirm any completed-work data standard required for the project.

Protect continuity of control and records

One lead survey firm can be a practical choice, but it is not the only workable arrangement. The important point is that every handover between people, teams or stages is documented. The incoming team needs the agreed control information, current design revision, known changes and the required reporting format.

Protect control marks where the scope requires them, maintain a clear record of changes and agree how completed work will be captured before it becomes inaccessible. This gives the project team a usable record from the first survey through to the final deliverable.

Lock survey dates in when you still plan the job

Write the survey scope into the programme at feasibility, then confirm dates as the relevant design and construction milestones become firm. The appropriate notice period varies by scope, site access, project complexity and the surveyor’s actual availability.

Do this:

  • Add survey dependencies to the programme with the engineer, designer and certifier.
  • State the agreed coordinate reference system and height datum in the brief.
  • Confirm the current design revision, site access, control requirements and required outputs before each visit.
  • Agree how data and control information will transfer between project stages or survey teams.
  • Confirm the receiving authority’s completed-work requirements before construction starts.
